I have no idea what update got everything sorted out but using this sledge hammer I was able to get a bunch downloaded and installed. Too many Windows patches have caused too much grief over the years. Hope this solution help you if you're having the same updating problem. Using "Stop" Windows Update in Control Panel - Services - Windows Update did the trick.
