I quickly bookmarked this site and did exactly as you suggested - turned off my firewall!!! Everytime I do a clean install eveything works fine except the Windows Update which gets stuck at "Checking for Updates" forever with almost 50% constant CPU usage of its process. Have been struggling for days to update a fresh install of Win 7 Pro SP1 and this did the trick. Now my software will work again with all the current updates installed and subsequent new updates thereafter.
