I don't install OSes too much anymore (maybe like a refresh every couple of months) and I never knew of Rufus and last night it worked perfectly. hi have you tried taking hard drive out and starting laptop with any usb stick or dvd? I posted the question on Lenovo Support website, but got no response from anyone at all. A simple solution that I did not expect to work actually worked: I put the SSD into an external USB sata disk cradle, and plugged that into another Windows 8 machine. I did this because UEFI is new to me and it helps me remember that it's in place of the old standard, but if I changed the terminology in this post, This morning the screen showed something about an i/o error. In an attempt to solve the situation, I tried to reinstall Windows from the Reinstall CD.
When in doubt, start with the basics! I think I made a Restore Point, FWIW, in case I want to try to get a like-new software environment. To tell you the truth I don't even need to do the clean install right now. I suppose I have no reason to rule that out. if they are marked readonly you can clear the attribute all else fails you can run repair commands to fix the boot record with bootrec.exe bootrec /fixmbr bootrec.exe /fixboot bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd The fact that the machine "updated" after starting makes me think it was a Microsoft update.
